Graham Walker PGA Master Professional

Graham Walker coaching Paul Waring, European Tour

Walker’s Golf Academy – Graham Walker

Graham came to The Oaks as Head Professional at the start of 2004. His unique ability to connect with and inspire every level of golfer has brought him to the highest level of his Profession.  He is respected by fellow Golf Professionals and Amateurs alike and is much sought after to work with his beloved Yorkshire and the England Amateur Squads.  His achievements in spotting young raw talent, working with and developing this through to the highest levels of Amateur and European Tour golf  are well documented.  His ability to demonstrate what he teaches is unique, and even those who go on with their careers at the highest level never forget their time spent developing their talent at Walker’s Golf Academy.

Graham’s Career in Golf

Graham’s talent for his chosen game was duly rewarded when he became Assistant Professional to Douglas Poole at The Chesterfield Golf Club. Doug worked previously with Dick Burton, 1939 Open Champion and he generously passed on his knowledge of the game to Graham with great success, encouraging him to take an active part in coaching young players. Graham also began coaching golf at various night schools.

This year saw him move on to work at Lees Hall under the wing of Ray Wilkinson who was renowned for his love of the game of golf enabling Graham to soak up his knowledge as well as spotting a talent for playing and encouraging him to work hard at his own game. This regime culminated in him coming Runner-Up in the British Assistants’ Match play Championship and winning many local tournaments and playing in The Open Championship. His spare time was taken up coaching at Sheffield University, Sheffield Polytechnic as well as for South Yorkshire and Derbyshire County Councils.

Graham’s hard work paid off when he was offered the job of Head Professional at the prestigious Hillsborough Golf Club, a renowned leading and forward thinking Sheffield/Yorkshire Club. Alongside his continued practice and playing, he took an active role in Club Life. During this time he won PGA Regional Tournaments as well as becoming:

• Yorkshire Open Champion (three times!)

• Yorkshire Classics Champion (three times)

• Yorkshire PGA Champion

• Runner Up in the National Betterball Championships.

During this period his real passion for coaching and developing golfers, young and old became ever clearer. Under his tuition ELEVEN of the Junior Section at Hillsborough turned professional, three of them scaling the heights to play on the European Tour.

It is worth mentioning that John Mellor played successfully on tour, winning on the Challenge Tour before illness forced him to take a break. He now works as part of the team at The Walker’s Golf Academy at The Oaks.

Oliver Whiteley gained his card and managed a creditable third at Leopards Creek in his very first European Tour tournament. He had several top ten Challenge Tour events and now Oliver is also developing his substantial talent as a coach in Cheshire and often pays visits to Graham for advice and a chat at The Oaks.

Neil Cheetham finished second in that very same competition at Leopards Creek, losing out in a play off to Charl Schwartzel. Graham coached Neil as a junior at Lees Hall up to him becoming Club Professional at Dore and Totley and on his way to the European Tour.

The Junior Section at Hillsborough continues to thrive to this day, with many of them going on to win County and National competitions. Graham’s commitment to coaching and talent spotting culminated in him having to make the difficult decision to leave Hillsborough to concentrate on a full time coaching career.

Thanks to the great support of the Hall family, Graham was able to commence a full time coaching career at Barlborough Links and The Graham Walker School of Golf was born, with associates Lysa Jones and Neil Cheetham.

This was a milestone in Graham’s career when he was asked to coach the Yorkshire boys and men’s teams. The men went on to win Eight County Championships in that decade and numerous leagues.

2004 to present day

With the support of the Nutt family, Lysa Jones and latterly John Mellor, Walker’s Golf Academy at The Oaks opened for business in April of that year. Since then many local, County, International and Professional players have taken advantage of Graham’s knowledge and this facility.

All the hard work was acknowledge when in

2015 Graham was named COACH OF THE YEAR by ENGLAND GOLF

Another great milestone in 2004 was when Graham began coaching David Horsey, Daniel Willett and Paul Waring. All three went on to represent England at every level with Willett and Horsey going on to play in the Walker Cup.

David Horsey worked hard at his game, moving swiftly through amateur golf and turning Professional after the 2007 Walker Cup. In 2008 he played on the Challenge Tour, winning twice and in 2009 Graham enjoyed celebrating his European Tour wins in Germany and Morocco.

Paul Waring is renowned for his ball striking ability but has also worked extremely hard on his scoring skills, allowing competing at the highest levels on the European Tour. A win is only round the corner for Paul, unfortunately a couple of injuries have hampered his progress this year but he will soon be back working harder than ever to achieve what it so nearly within his reach.

Daniel Willett won the BMW Championship in 2012 under Graham’s guidance and has gone on to win the 2016 Masters Champion in Augusta. He went from a 5 handicapped club golfer to +5 and on to become The Number One Amateur in the world following over a decade of being coached by Graham. He has in the last couple of years achieved other wins on the European Tour and has now moved on to try his hand with huge success on the PGA Tour but never forgets that Graham’s information, mentoring and his own huge work ethic helped him achieve the stratospheric results he is enjoying today.

Graham and his many pupils have enjoyed huge success at The Oaks and in some ways he has come full circle, helping members to enjoy their golf at a better level but still doing what he enjoys the most, developing Players of the Future.
